FAIR and GREEN Guidelines

FAIR’N GREEN sustainability standard

In order to become certified as FAIR'N GREEN the applicant winery must comply with the FAIR'N GREEN sustainability standard. The standard stipulates that all wineries have to pursue and maintain permanently appropriate measures in order to foster a sustainable development of the company itself as well as its region. The nature of measures may depend on the specific context of the company and will be assessed as part of a yearly sustainability audit. The sustainability audit matches the management measures of the winery to the FAIR'N GREEN sustainability standard. For a first-time certification, the company needs to score at least 50% of all points of the sustainability assessment. In the consequent years the company has to improve its sustainability performance be 3% annually.

This standard can be applied to all full-time wineries who grow their own grapes  and pursue their own vinification and sales. It can also be applied to grape growers and cellar-wineries but its main focus is holistic wineries.

Compliance with the standard is evaluated annually and reviewed by a third party.

The FAIR’N GREEN Principles

  • We guide our industry into the direction of a sustainable future. That is why we consciously opt for a proactive integration of sustainability criteria into our core business.

  • We think that sustainable development is characterised by the integrative consideration of economic, ecological and social goals. This approach underlies the FAIR and GREEN system and is the maxim of our actions.

  • We follow the concept of strong sustainability where all fields of sustainability are considered equally and may be not substituted. Goals are the security of human livelihood, preservation of social productive potential and the upkeep of options for development and actions.

  • We stand for future-oriented production modes where quality and sustainability condition and strengthen each other. Neither do we sacrifice requirements for quality to the requirements for sustainability, nor do we limit the sustainability potential of our industry with our requirements for quality.

  • Our understanding of sustainability is not restricted to the compliance with laws and regulations. We take the initiative and design the future and most importantly the understanding of sustainability in our industry and society.

  • Our actions are at all times transparent and verifiable. We trust in the dialogue with multiple stakeholders, in order to identify and realise additional sustainability potentials.

  • The criteria, according to which we certify, are a synthesis of best practice, scientific research as well as the needs of civilian stakeholders. These criteria underlie a continuous development process which is actively shaped by the members of FAIR and GREEN e.V. association and and which also take into consideration the changing needs of sustainable development. We get involved actively into the work of the association and serve as role models.

  • We treat all supply chain partners as equal persons and promote within the framework of our business model the less privileged. Additionally, we contribute to the upkeep of municipal structures.

  • We intend to optimise resource and energy use and harmonise them with available resources. The input of artificial substances into the ecosystems is , according to the precautionary principle, aimed to be reduced and limited to a minimum.

  • We seek responsibility for sustainable development primarily in ourselves and in the scope of our business model and not in the consumer of our products.
