Wine Estate Spiess
"To us, FAIR'N GREEN is the system, which grasps exactly our understanding of sustainability and resource management.
The practical orientation and the letting go of rigid eco guidelines, as well as the assistance, which specifies perfomance parameters that allow our development in this direction, have convinced us."
The Wine Estate Spiess is the first FAIR and GREEN member from Rhine-Hesse and a real family business. The family has been growing wine since 1509, until recently managed by Jürgen Spiess who has now passed on the vineyard to his sons, Johannes and Christian. They have just recently completed their education, in well-known wine estates such as Philipp Kuhn.
Although they are still very young themselves, the two of them are already considering the following generations and use sustainable practices. Hence, wine is produced according to quality over quantity and the soil is cultivated so that the vineyard remains in its naturalness and can thus be used by the following generations for wine-growing.Besides targeted harvest management, this means abandoning the use of herbicides. On 28 hectares, the young wine growers cultivate each fifty percent white and red grapes.
The sites Bechtheimer Hasensprung, Geyersberg, Heilig-Kreuz and Westhofener Kirchspiel grow, apart from Riesling and Chardonnay, also Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, among others. The Wine Estate Spiess has been awarded three stars from Eichelmann and three grapes from Gault-Millau.
The wine estate is still in the ongoing certification process.
